Here is a chart that shows just how the digestive system works. It is amazing that this all goes on inside of us and we do not even have to think about it. But things like emotions and illness can disrupt the digestive process. Another important part of your digestive system working well is relaxing while you eat and after your eat. Do not eat when mad, when in a hurry, or on the run. Try to unplug when you are eating so that you can relax and get to know your family again.
Let's take a look at the journey your food is going to take through the digestive system:
Right from the start it is very important to chew, chew, chew your food so that the body can use it more efficiently. By chewing your food into smaller particles the enzymes in your mouth has a larger surface area to apply saliva to which starts the digestive process. Carbohydrates begin to breakdown here. Proteins begin to break down in your stomach. Once the broken down food gets into your small intestine it works on breaking down fats, starches, protein and carbohydrates and absorption of nutrients through the small intestine walls takes place. the next stop is the large intestine where salt is removed to donate back to the liver and your waste is passed through. This will all go on without a hitch provided you have given your body everything it needs to remain healthy.

As you can see the digestive tract is pretty amazing and when given the right food it functions without our giving it a second thought. But if you do not give it the proper nutrients it can shut down. It can lead to disease such as gallstones, liver disease, intestinal trouble, stomach issues.
